Frank Gehry Trellis - Napa Valley
Frank Gehry Trellis - Napa Valley
Gehry Partners

Architectural scale bends are fabricated into a trellis for a Frank Gehry design that is designed to incorporate 36,000 sq ft of wood trellis. The fabrication shown is 8' x 16' x 7' and is a proof of concept piece that is located on site at Hall Wines in Napa Valley where the Gehry building is being constructed.

Cherner Chair

Norman Cherner studied and taught at the Columbia University Fine Arts Department and was an instructor at the Museum of Modern Art in New York from 1947 to 1949. At the same time he also began his practice, embarking on a lifetime exploration of multidisciplinary design.
Although best known for his furniture design, his work included almost all aspects of design: from graphics, glassware and lighting, to his pioneering work in prefabricated housing.
The Cherner Arm Chair was first built in 1958, and was reissued by the sons Thomas and Benjamin in 1999.

Landscape Model for Martha Swartz Partners
Martha Schwartz Partners

Landscape Architects Martha Schwartz Partners commissioned a 1/4 scale model of a section of a 30,000 sq ft wood plank decked indoor park to be built in Korea. The undulating landforms are created from solid Red Oak, bent and sculpted to create hills, valleys, rivers, waterfalls, forests, steps, and benches.  The model illustrates a Teak and Holly style yacht deck within the fabrication, except that it is modelled in Red Oak and Walnut.

Drum Workshop Inc.

A completely new musical instrument is developed and marketed exclusively through Drum Workshop Inc. in Oxnard, CA. Never before has a bent 1" hardwood shell been possible to construct. Using our proprietary engineered hardwoods to manufacture this product has allowed for an increase in pitch without the dead sound of thick glued laminations. Contact www.dwdrums.com to order.

Art Liestman
"As contemporary wood artists push the boundaries of woodturning in many directions, it is a challenge to find one's own niche. I feel that it is essential to look outside of the turned wood field for inspiration. I find it in both music and mathematics, both of which have long been a part of my life. I also find new ideas and directions in more traditional art forms and in the textures and patterns of everyday objects."
"I spend my days as a professor in Computing Science at Simon Fraser University. When I leave the halls of academe, I can usually be found turning (and otherwise tormenting) wood in my home studio in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. My involvement in woodworking began with a desire to make experimental musical instruments. Eventually, my instruments needed turned components, so I acquired a lathe. As I gained some experience with the lathe, my passion for turning quickly overtook my other woodworking interests and I began to see myself as primarily a woodturner. Over the years I have increasingly been drawn to the artistic side of woodturning and have given up trying to make functional objects." more at www.artliestman.com

USS Constitution uses Compwood mast hoops
Pert Lowell Co for the USS Constitution

The USS Constitution uses Compwood™ Mast Hoops in Red Oak. When steam bent parts were being made failure rates of 80% to 90% were experienced. The failures were eliminated with Compressed Wood while increasing quality and strength of the finished product.
