Architectural Fabrication: Building Projects Employing Compression Bending
Pure Timber LLC has scaled up wood bending to architectural scale. Projects include a trellis fabrication for the Frank Gehry designed Hall Wines hospitality building (viewable on-site in Napa Valley), a mockup for "Parc 1" a Richard Rogers and Skylan Properties project in Seoul South Korea, and a curved wall project for the Goldman Sachs Conrad Hotel in New York City. We are quoting work for Casino, Hospitality, Shopping Malls, Hotels, Auditoriums, Parks, Landscapes and other high end Commercial, Residential and Civic projects. Rapid prototyping and model building is offered as a service to allow architects and designers to realize their 3D creations in solid hardwoods. Completed and installed in January 2012, Pure Timber LLC fabricated two large curved walls that are the new elevator lobby for the NYC Conrad Hotel. Shown below are videos from work in progress. It feels like an amorphous tunnel of walnut. The wall was cold molded by laying up 1/8" layers on a bias to form a 3/4" thick solid 3D wooden shell. Solid walnut fins are attached that run vertically every 3/4" and are back beveled (rolling bevels) to fit the curving wall.
